We recently spoke with Scott Mackiewicz to learn more about his new role as Vice President and Heavy Rail lead. We asked him about his background, what he enjoys about working at Braun Intertec and his new role, and his advice for those just starting their career.

In college, I started out studying structural engineering but then I was exposed to the everchanging field of geotechnical engineering. As some know, no matter where you dig a hole, the soil encountered will always be different. I enjoy studying the varying subsurface conditions on each project, which continues to provide technical challenges that keep me engaged.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to pursue advanced degrees in geotechnical and environmental engineering. These degrees added a broad base of technical skills that have helped me grow in my career. I have found that my advanced degrees have been critical to enhancing my communication skills, have enabled me to work on a variety of projects, build client relationships, mentor staff and progress to a leadership role at Braun Intertec.

What is your favorite aspect of your role or the most rewarding part of what you do at Braun Intertec?
I enjoy challenging projects and working with the great staff at Braun Intertec to come up with effective solutions for our clients. There’s nothing better than seeing young staff who you have mentored deal effectively with complex engineering problems, build their own client relationships and expand their careers.

你什么时候开始工作的Heavy Rail? What made you head this direction?
I started working in Heavy Rail back in the 1990’s when I was given an opportunity to work on several different rail projects across the country. I ended up really liking it, so I stuck to it. I enjoyed the people I associated with on the projects, and the quick turnaround on project delivery. There’s just something satisfying about designing a project and seeing it get constructed in a timely fashion.

We bring together diverse relationships and multi-discipline technical networks that make it easy to develop project teams and deliver results. Our most unique qualities are the ability to pull the right staff together on short notice and deliver projects on schedule.

I look for a strong technical background, common sense, and interpersonal skills. I also look for team members that can think on their feet, collaborate, develop constructible solutions, and communicate solutions to the client.

What should new Braun Intertec employees know about working here? What piece of advice would you give them?
Braun Intertec is a great company and has a lot to offer. My recommendation to all new employees is to always look for new opportunities that allow you to grow your technical, business, and interpersonal skills. It takes an understanding of all these aspects to be successful in your career as a consultant.

I would also recommend they make the most of their career and to always be willing to take on new challenges. Just because we currently do something a certain way today, doesn’t mean we can’t do it differently in the future.

What are some of your hobbies, or things you like to do outside of work?
I enjoy the outdoors and spending time with my family. My favorite activities include upland bird and deer hunting, fishing and hiking. There’s also nothing like a long walk with your family and dogs to let you relax after a hard workday.
