Pioneer Prairie Wind Farm

Pioneer Prairie Wind Farm

Located along the Iowa and Minnesota state line in Northeast Iowa, is one of the state’s most significant wind farms, Pioneer Prairie. The farm contains 184 wind turbines, with a total installed capacity of 300.3 megawatts.

We began working on the Pioneer Prairie Wind Farm in 2007. Plans for the project included 122 turbines to be installed in the spring of 2008 and another 62 that winter. During the project, we had five drill rigs at the site and provided geotechnical engineering and falling weight deflectometer (FWD) services. In addition to these core services, we were also retained for seismic testing, concrete, grout and steel reinforcement.

Pioneer Prairie Wind Farm officially went online in early 2009, and has proven to be an asset to the surrounding community and the environment: reducing the need for less environmentally friendly power sources, with the ability to power approximately 84,000 Iowa homes.
